the cheapo parents don’t buy him toys very often, as most of his loot from his first birthday are still in a) good condition; b) relevant; and c) sufficient in sustaining his interest (plus, there’re perhaps three train/car track sets still left unopened).
besides, i hate to see so much plastic go to waste, and am wary of turning the house into a ‘fisher-price’ landfill. on his collection of balls, however, we’ve been a little flexible, allowing him to acquire a variety of sizes on the occasional whim. how typical, anak melayu suka main bola! but, hmm, we did include basketball and bowling ball in the mix, and maybe next time golf balls, so… some balance there? ;p
anyway, remember his fascination with cranes? only now, through his eyes, have i taken notice of our skyline, and realise that s’pore is practically littered with cranes. they’re everywhere, almost threatening to take over the land! just look up and chances are, you’ll find one towering in the horizon.
the daddy recalled how he used to own a toy crane set when he was small, and he’d described it in such ‘loving’ detail that i started looking around for one, for aniq as well as him. heh.
and just as i was about to give up, i entered toys r us (duh), and lo and behold – the box stared right at my face, with a very nice price of $29.90 to boot…

aniq the builder

batteries required

phua chu aniq says: got remote control, donch play play!
what a monstrosity this thing is. tsk.
but do you wonder who was more excited, the daddy or the son? ;p
well maybe it was me, for lugging the huge package home, to see them rip it open like christmas came early, and being pleased with myself for the find. heh.
don’t count on this being a regular thing, though.
i also foresee that this fascination will pass soon enough, and yet another mound of coloured plastic will join the rubble.
till then, enjoy all that whirring and swivelling.
(though mummy doesn’t get it, really. lol!)

ok, ok, i succumbed. to pure evil consumerism.

the thought just popped into my head that morning, and the moment the intention came pouring out of my mouth, the Husband perked his ears like a cat at the sound of a sardine tin being opened, the (gadget) opportunist that he is. i think he secretly bewitched me while i was sleeping, what do you think…?
in any case, he immediately dragged us to the store, probably afraid that i’d change my mind as suddenly, as i’m sometimes wont to do when it comes to electronic goods, and promptly picked this fella out of the crowd.
and so we have now a family of three – daddy oly, mommy canny, and err, pink baby lumixette.
i swear i don’t know what’s gotten into me.
ok, ok, consider this, ie. the OCCASIONAL custody of the above, as an early anniversary gift for you, eh, Husband.
now, you KNOW what i want, right? pls refer to my email to you dated 06/08/07.
;D
***
and today, as much as i was tempted to deck myself in all-black and go against the grain of pure evil conformity, i succumbed to the ubiquitous red-and-white combo befitting the current celebrations.
i just tell myself it’s not out of sheer patriotism, but err, an excuse to put together a fabulous red and white outfit without being sneered at for looking like a walking national flag. (it’s not often we get to do this you know.)
well ok, ok, sneer away, but at least there are no stars on my shirt. hmph.
i wonder what the lil bub is up to at this time, he’s supposed to celebrate national day with the rest of his playgroup. i had a chuckle on my way to work as i conjured an image of him waving a flag, decked in his red tshirt.
ahh, brainwashing at such a tender age. we’ll see how that works out.
now, excuse me while i continue to hide myself at my desk while the rest of the workhorses are downstairs singing along to some cheesy nationalistic songs and kowtowing to the flagpoles or whatever it is they do to show allegiance to the country…
;p
***
ok i succumbed. i went downstairs… for the FREE food and goody bag!
how’s that for being a true-bluered-and-white s’porean??

well, after much deliberation we decided to jump the gun…..

meet pak mat punto!
….. haha, gotcha!! admit it, for a moment you guys thought that we bought a new car, right?
my dad decided to trade in his sonata for something smaller, it’s a grande punto to be precise. nice compact hatchback or better known as a supermini. we had the chance to test drive the car on sunday. found the handling very good and rather responsive. a continental car feels more solid compared to a japanese or korean make.
even aniq loves to drive it! more pictures here.

gostan… gostan…

who says playing too much computer games is no good for you? well, for my brothers, it turned out the opposite as they brought home the sony playstation 3 after becoming champions in the new paper cyber challenge! we were there at Funan IT Mall to capture their finest hour. their chosen game was the nba street home court, which is a basketball game set on the streets. they had an early scare in the semi-finals when they trailed by more than 8 points before composing themselves to come back and win by 22-20. fortunately, they had an easier time in the finals, steamrolling their opponents 21-9.
aniq, looking rather uncomfortable with the attention.
“hmm…. daddy, u sure you know how to play?”
it ain’t heavy, its a PLAYSTATION 3!!
fullest concentration required
for more pictures, check out my flickr, here
their prize? a cool playstation 3 with $1000 cash and $300 game voucher! how sweet was that! i guess aniq was their lucky mascot, so perhaps a share of the prize money for aniq? hehe…

yes, its finally here!! the olympus e-510 dslr camera had arrived in singapore!! sweeet!!
i’ve been waiting for the successor to my e-500 ever since it was announced at pma 2007 back in march. olympus singapore has been doing an advertisement blitz on the new camera in the straits times for the past 3 days, which makes me drool even more….
so what’s good about the new e-510 as compared to the e-500??
for one, they upped the megapixels from 8.0 to 10.0, so you can print out really big pictures of yourself or someone reading the newspaper
there’s also a built-in image stabilizer for times when you need to take pictures with long exposure time without the tripod which helps to keep the image from being blurry.
but what sold me to the camera was the live preview function which you can’t find in other dslr camera. what it does is you can take pictures without looking into the viewfinder, you just need to look at the live preview LCD screen at the back of the camera, something like your ordinary digital camera. it really helps when you might need to lie down to get a shot.
there are many other new cool features and updated improvements found in the camera. for more info, you can check out www.dpreview.com.
but it seems for the time being, i just have to admire it from afar, as i just got the e500. end of the year, perhaps?

mak nabil, your mms made my day. like, seriously.

“mum, i wanna see Abang Aniq’s antics too!”
well, it WAS a dreary monday after all…

in other news, i would like to state on record the official demise of our friend, Lumix.
dear Lumix, you have served us well. well, except for that one time when your lcd screen cracked and we had to pay like a hundred buckeroos to have you fixed. and then now, you had to go and get your lens cracked too. this time round, no amount of resuscitation could revive you.
but bygones. i shall not name names. there will be no blame games. *looks at aniq with dagger eyes*
so, Lumix, since your passing, we have adopted a replacement in your loving memory.

in freaking pink, no less. yes, very “tak grunge”, as one of my associates would say.
i thus bestow upon her the name Lumixette, in reflection of her overt girliness. i dare say you will only be caressed by no one other than me (as the man is SO not going to be caught dead carrying a pink anything, gadget or otherwise), so prepare yourself to live a life of chastity, pure and unsullied.
hello, you.
no cracking of any parts of yourself now, you hear??

i’m the type of person who needs serious motivation or threat before you can get me to exercise. but because i’m in a certain uniformed organisation, passing the IPPT (individual physical proficency test) is mandatory if i want to get promoted plus other criterias like low MCs, high EQ/IQ, etc and most importantly, carry favors aka angkating, especially your boss. no, the last part i made it up, seriously…
anyway, we are not talking about those, but i’m going to rave about 2007′s greatest invention, well, maybe to me, the nike+ipod sport kit. this kit had transformed me into a lean mean running machine. well, maybe not so lean lah, but i’m like 50% more inclined to run compared to like a year ago, when the only time i run is when i need to pass my ippt.
the sport kit is a wireless pair of add-ons that you plug in to your ipod nano and your jogging shoes. it turns your ipod into a personal running tracker where you can measure the distance covered, your timing and calories burnt. the best thing is that you don’t need to look at the display to see the reading, just press the centre button and a female/male voice will provide you with the information without interrupting your music. you can even upload the data to nikeplus.com to compare your timing and save your best performance. highly graphical website that helps you to track all your timings.

i’m finding routes to run and i discovered that the park connectors around the island is a great way to run and explore places that you normally won’t see. so far, i’ve tried jogging from the tampines connector to pasir ris park since i’m staying in the east. the distance is around 2.5km, just right for ippt. maybe those in the east would like to join me my next target would be the one from tampines connector to bedok reservoir, which is around 8.5km. seems far, but with my favourite songs blasting on my earphones, it shouldn’t be a problem.
so for those with ipod nano, this is a great add-on to help you keep in shape. for me, i’m already hooked!

it’s official, my ipod which was in coma for the past 2 months was called upon to be with the lord… deemed 99.9% unrepairable by the apple technician who instead recommended me to get a new ipod. he advised me to keep the $80 service charge for a complete diagnose of the ipod, “No use, even if it’s repairable, the cost of replacing the harddisk plus service charge would be around $200-$300″. So sad.
we travelled all the way to Orchard Cineleisure in hope that the service centre could resurrect the ipod, but alas, it seemed that our trip was futile. With the warranty that expired last August, I was really left with no choice. Doesn’t make any economic sense to repair it.
I didn’t expect the harddisk to die on me, since for the past year or so, the ipod had been subjected to the harshest conditions and yet it survived. but looks like it didn’t make it this time.
Rest in peace, buddy, you will be missed…

I guess many have commented on the quality of the pictures that we took for the blog. Well, its no big secret that we have been using a digital single-lens reflex (dslr) camera for most of the pictures.. An Olympus E-500 to be precise. It’s a good basic entry-level dslr camera for a novice like me.
It’s a joy using the camera as I get to experiment with the many settings and features. I’ve became a shutterbug overnight!! Taking pictures of everything in sight… Well, it’s a good way to learn the many functions of the camera, don’t you think?
Now every outing has been an opportunity for me to shoot! Even the wifey has become a shutterbug like me, trying out the camera when i’m not using it. But we still use our trusty lumix camera for some pictures. I don’t think it will replace the dslr soon, but for the time being, the Olympus E-500 is izadnhana’s official camera.

he has this theory that non-living things, eg. electrical/electronic goods, have ‘feelings’ and ‘lives’ of their own.
you know, like when you’re just thinking of replacing that old-but-still-working refridgerator with a brand new one you saw at the stores, it suddenly goes into cardiac arrest and, being irresuscitable, dies a timely death.
or when you’re thinking about changing that old-but-not-so-trendy mobile phone you’ve had for a while now to a top-of-the-line avant-garde one, it decides to merajuk and “run away”, by getting itself lost in the taxi/bus/mrt/other public places.
once, just when we were about to buy a new bed for me in the old house, the old bed simply fell apart by itself, as if it knew its lifespan had expired and would no longer be of service to me, its master.
anyway, the mister got himself a new toy recently. hurhur.

and proceeded to play around with it, completely ignoring his once-favourite point-and-shoot toy he’d acquired not so long ago.

hey, even *i* had a bit of fun with it.

my tampines’ next top model.
and guess what?
barely a few days later, that trusty point-and-shoot we call lumix, attempted to commit suicide.
i say attempt, because it didn’t really succeed in falling to its demise completely.
the mister was retrieving something from the table and lumix fell with a crash to the floor, cracking its LCD screen, akin to a head trauma injury.
no, we didn’t call for an ambulance, but we’ll send it to the hospital for recovery soon.
erm, reaaaal soon. *strokes lumix*

i’ve heard of all kinds of machines in my short life of 11 months.
iPod. iRobot. iRiver. iDunnowhat. (i hear there are also things like iMac, iShuffle, iSwallow.)
so self-centred hor, these people with “i” things?
hmm, maybe “i” stands for “intelligent”. maybe people like being surrounded by “intelligent” things. but can people be more “intelligent” and start coming up with names that don’t start with “i”? like, i don’t know, uZap?
or better still, use “we” lah. sounds more friendly right? “we” denotes sharing. like weBrolly (ie. technologically-enhanced umbrella). or wePet (ie. mechanical domestic animal).
meanwhile, the Daddy has gotten himself another one of those “i” junk to add to his clutter of playthings.
he said it’s an iLuv.
huh?

as you can see, i was rudely awoken in the morning by this so-called intelligent gadget. but hah! weBabies are infinitely superior in our intelligence than a little box that makes a whole lotta noise. after a few suspenseful and thrilling moments later, i figured it out in no time. (see my hitchcock-like silhouette in the background? cool huh.)

iSimply hit SNOOZE.
it wasn’t so fun, so i didn’t bother with it much.
Daddy’s toe bulu made for SO much more entertainment.

and for that, i shall call him iHobbit.
