on a lazy sunday evening last week, i managed to get the gang to join me prawning. its my first time prawning and i guessed for them too. we tried the one at punggol, there are a few all over the island, from bishan to pasir ris but the punggol location seems central to the rest of them. its $15 an hour but its get cheaper if you book for 3 hours which is $30. and you could barbeque the prawns there too!

waiting for the next bite
rendra waiting for the bite that never comes!

the prawns were nothing to shout about, they were of decent size but the pond’s water looked rather clear so we could really see the prawns swimming along, haha!! anyway, we just prawned for an hour each. we got to choose our rods and were also given powdered bait which i suspected were dried worms. we tried the baits for a few minutes but it seems that the prawns were not biting. finally we got the live worms that they sell at the counter. and these worked like a charm! among us we caught around 11 prawns in an hour, not bad for beginners like us!

prize catch
happy with our catch of the day!

anyway, we decided not to barbeque the prawns there as lenny offered to make sambal prawns :)
we ended the day with dinner at jalan kayu instead. for more pictures check out my flickr!

ok, we finally held the highly anticipated burger party last week and what a party it turned out to be!
the ingredients for the burger had a minor tweak to it but basically it followed the recipe from here. in the beginning, i wasn’t really sure if 4kg of mince beef was enough for the hungry people coming later but i guessed 36 thick fat beef patties were more than they could chew, literally!

raw burgers rendra's burger special special with eggs

the first few guests came just after 730pm and in no time, the grilling was in full force. since it was a grill-ya-own burger party, the guests were pretty much left to their own devices on the type of burgers they prefer. rendra started the grilling by making his own burger with egg combo. as it was a potluck thing, there were also a variety of other food and desserts. special thanks went to heriati and hubby for bring us a burger cake, even though they didn’t really stay for the party! i think we should host a special private burger party just for you guys! :)

looks bigger than fina's head! another look at the burger cake jai as the hamburglar

they came, they cooked and they ate! what more could a host ask for? the food were great and some of these food included potato salad, apple crumble, caramel popcorn plus the oh so sinful chocolate brownie by lydia! the kids entertained themselves with aniq’s and auni’s toys, the guys with fifa10 while the girls as usually had their pekpot session. we even managed to include a surprised birthday cake for our birthday girl, farah! (how old, eh?) anyway, i guessed they all had so much fun that they want the burger party to be a regular event! (let me think about it)

been meaning to post this up a few days ago.

i’d screamed my head off each time she attempted to climb over the back of our new sofa, and also at her brother whom she was imitating. her daddy told me it was no use coz she’d already done this stunt a few times, but only at the point of me capturing this vid that i discovered she really could do it – without harming herself, apparently.

grrrr.

note her “dare-you-to-stop-me” look while she performed the stunt for my benefit, and then gleefully dancing her arms about as she tottered away from me in escape from persecution.

i once overheard an old makcik, a long time ago in my teenage days, loudly warning her young charges who were swinging on railings or whatever – “jangan buat gitu! nanti kau jatuh, kepala kau pecah!” and i remembered thinking, come on, makcik, seriously? break his head? how melodramatic! hyperbolic! exaggerating! coz it seemed ridiculous that a kid, an agile one at that, could drop on his head from swinging on some mere low railings, and have his skull crack open, spilling its bloody content out all over the ground.

but now, many years later and having become a mom, the image has turned into a highly possible (and gory) reality, and the same phrase, which i once scoffed indignantly at in my arrogant youth, is perpetuated on my very own children.

“TURUN! JANGAN BUAT GITU, NANTI KAU JATUH, KEPALA KAU PECAAAAH!”

yes, i have turned into that histrionic makcik after all, in this great, karmic circle of life.

i was inspired by discovery travel channel’s man vs food, dagwood sandwich that i really had to recreate the sandwich.
for those uninitiated, a dagwood sandwich is named after dagwood bumstead of the comic strip, blondie who loves to make huge sandwiches.

so on a rainy afternoon, i traveled all the way to tampines mart to get stuff for my sandwich. i got 5 different types of meat cut for my sandwich, foccacia bread (my favourite!) and the usual greens. took a while to get my foccacia bread, had to travel to another part of tampines for the bread, apparently its sold out at certain places! ok, on with the program.

first we cut the bread and spread the greans plus sauces
foccacia breadmustard and other sauces

put all your meats in between, yummy!
roast beef, turkey ham, chicken ham, pastrami, meatloaf and cheese

all set!
my very own dagwood sandwich

just lovely!
looks healthy to me :)

wanted to go all out and stack the meats as high as possible but i couldn’t possibly finish the whole sandwich! anyway, 5 meats plus cheese is a good start. btw, the meats that i used were roast beef, pastrami, chicken ham, turkey ham, and meatloaf.

for clearer and juicier pictures of my attempt, check out my flickr.

a few things happening here, if you wish to observe:
- lil A, like most kids, especially girls, loves to dance.
- the part where the chicks go “cheep cheep here, cheep cheep there”, she interprets as “cheek cheek”, which is why she pats her cheeks.
- the twisting thing she does with her hands and wrists, that’s her trademark, reserved for songs she likes best.
- like most girls going wild on the dance floor, she gets jeered at by boys, in this case, a bigger boy, and in turn, her silly brother. the bigger boy started it, pointing out her diaper peeking out of her skirt, and the two boys went into hysterics over her diaper showing, for some reason. boys! *rolls eyes* she has no idea why they’re laughing at her, but whatever, maybe she’s hawt (she does have a thing for bigger boys, remember?), so she goes on dancing, oblivious and enjoying the attention. it’s all very paris hilton.
- her “quack quack” action is more like shaving her armpit.
- the girl beside her is older by a few months but she’s got to learn some moooves, man.

i gotta buy more loud nursery rhyme cds.

so it was adam’s 5th birthday, and his aunt and uncle (no, not us) wanted to surprise him with a party. so sweet of them to throw him one. then again, i think i’d do the same – if i haven’t had kids myself.

he’s not close to me as much as i’d like us to be, but circumstances being so (he’s taken care of by his other grandma and only visits my mum once a week, at most), i hardly get to see him, or his brother, often. sad coz i remember when mum looked after him as a baby, i used to rush home from work, or steal away during lunch time, just so i could play with him, and i’d be all :( when his parents reached there before me to fetch him home.

and he’s so big now. very smart. very articulate. still shy. i gave him a book entitled “how to talk to girls”. i’m sure his parents won’t let him read it. (yes, he can read.)

BFF!!

the boys who used to fight for attention and toys when they were babies and toddlers, are crazy about each other when they meet. they go into animated chatter and form their own games only they get. i wish for them to keep bonding through the years. imagine them as teenagers! they’d surely cringe at these. *chuckle*

happy 5th, my nephie-poo. :)
