you know… it’s one thing to copy ideas (go ahead! take them!), but another thing to copy copywriting.
yes, there’s the word ‘copy’ in copywriting, but that doesn’t mean you can lift one’s carefully-thought-out choice, structure, and arrangement of words, and pass it off as yours.
if there’s one thing we hate, is our efforts in writing being lazily swiped from under our noses.
and please, don’t tell us that the same copywriting can be found everywhere on the net, or that everyone in this country has come up with the same common lines to market a particularly uncommon product, or that nothing is ‘original’ aaanyway. coz that’s just pushing coincidence waaay too far.
and even then, to plagiarise badly?
now that’s just… SimplyMelayu.

there’s a fine line between improvisation & making something your own, and blatant plagiarism.
if anyone reads our copywriting and compares with that of “si polan”, it’s not hard to notice the audacious attempt at ripping off our efforts! how does one expect to be successful in business if one can’t even craft out a niche for oneself? doesn’t squeezing one’s own creative juices garner more satisfaction at the end of the day?
go ahead and be inspired by others’ cake designs and names, but the least the person could have done is come up with her own writings/taglines/mottos instead of passing off w&f’s as her original composition. that’s just not cool, lor. SimplyMalas, melayu or otherwise.

hi hana. i understand your furor. but truth is, in business, things like this is inevitable. even british india copies ideas and make them their own, improvise on the quality and brand it as theirs. that’s how it goes. to be a successful business person, one should be fast to move on, improvise and keep moving forward. i dont mean to discriminate, but this is the exact reason why our race can never be successful in business. we are like plagued with this inferiority/superiority dual personality disorder that makes us incapable of marching on whenever there are setbacks. instead we allow ourselves to be bothered by such trivialities and challenges. and we complain. and we think negative. there are those few malay entrepeneurs who have made it and they are those whom we should aspire to be. the chinese are cut-throat when it comes to business, that explains their success. no time to gloat for them, they just move forward, move ahead, try new endeavours. don’t be put down, take it as a flattery, push your limits, give better service, give only the best in quality and insya’Allah, your customer base will expand. copycats you say? aren’t we all?

Hi Hana, fret not though I’ve seen a few diaper cakes from webbies such as baby tiara and many more, I must admit urs is wickedly nice, very detailed and neat. The rest are good too, I mean I for one could not do a diaper cake as nice as that. But I would say the originality part stands out really clear especially during the branding and marketing part. W&F is a cool name, fret not I’m sure for those who have been reading your blog, they could really see how hard you’ve been working and original you are in your ideas and all. Cheer up sis. Hehe and like the saying goes “imitation is the best form of flattery”.

Did you even read her entry? Her point is that it’s not about copying the designs or ideas, but the copywriting! Clearly W&F, both of whom write well, wouldn’t copy others’ copywriting. Maybe hana should write in Malay so you guys can understand better. :p
i was just waiting for someone like advisor to comment! the wifey has been telling me about others ‘copying’ their style, from covering up the diaper cakes to putting cupcakes on the cakes. well, i heard it all! everytime, i give her the same advice, so what, people will always copy, so innovate, think of other ways to stay at least 2-3 steps ahead of the competitors. do something different. no use brooding. find ways to overcome them.
but i guess what pisses her off was the way the simplygirl wrote about her diapercakes, a totally rip-off copywriting of not just hers, but another diaper cake maker’s taglines! hmm, its like back in school when you were doing summary writing and you replace word for word of the same sentence. she basically combined both their text and called it her own! at least if she really got no ideas, give credit where its due. maybe she can add, inspired by bt or w&f. :) that would be ideal in a perfect world, but in the real world, not a chance, hehe…
anyway, i believe competition is good and healthy, keep you on your toes, give more choice to the customers as they are the real winners. :)
