so i picked up the paper some time ago and found something which piqued my interest, which then led me to more interesting stuff.

angelina jolie was quoted as saying:

“Someone saying to me that I’m thin is not a compliment. I’ve always been lean and this year I lost my mom and I’ve gone through a lot. I have four kids and I finished breastfeeding – it’s been hard to get my nutrition back on track. Instead of people saying I look like a person dealing with something emotionally, they assume it’s because I want to fit into skinny jeans.”

so i tried to google for a photo of her – no, not being skinny – but breastfeeding.

there was one, but detractors have claimed that it’s fake. oh well.

i was telling izad that the tummy flabs are coming fast and furious, and he tried to psycho me into jogging with him, but i didn’t have any running shoeees, i lamented. i asked if i could take pills instead, but he wasn’t too keen about giving me half his liver, so that’s out of the question. the last resort – i’ll just need to get pregnant again. then the fat is justified, and when i b/feed again, i’ll be skinny again! yes!

anyway, back to my googling, which led me to find other celebs who b/fed. and WOW! there’s like, a whole website dedicated to spotting celebs who are preggers, who’ve given birth, etc. and naturally, quotable quotes from stars who b/fed.

http://www.celebrity-babies.com/breastfeeding/index.html

yeah, i’m always happy reading about people b/feeding, STILL. macam fetish liddat. and celebrities – they have the power to inspire mere mortals, so it’s great that that they speak on the issue in public.

oh, and i also found this international breast milk project – more wow! it’s a programme for volunteers to donate breast milk to the babies in africa orphaned by HIV. very noble cause. imagine, you can be the ‘ibu susuan’ (milk mother) of many african babies, no need to adopt them ala angelina or madonna!

bftee1 bftee2

and today’s straits times, there’s a front page report on filipino mothers staging a protest against milk powder companies, by baring their painted breasts to the media. goes to show that you DON’T need to be hollywood celebrities to get the message across, after all. :)

“The companies making baby-milk formula, led by Nestle, whose founder invented the product 137 years ago, and a clutch of American health-care giants, have long drawn fire for hard selling an expensive and – if mixed with unclean water – potentially lethal product in the developing world. Breastfeeding campaigners say that has gulled generations of mothers in poor countries into believing infant formula is superior to their milk.”

i suppose their agenda is slightly different, in that it really affects the infant mortality in the country. according to Unicef, 16,000 infants die a year in the Philippines from incorrect feeding practices, including the use of formula mixed with contaminated water. and more and more poor, low-income people there have fallen prey to the advertising message that infants raised on formula will grow up to do well in school, and thus find good jobs. they also regard b/feeding as “old-fashioned, low-class and backward”. how sad. :(

the filipinos are surely one of the strongest advocates in b/feeding. i was hosting a group of filipino officials just last month, and during our discussion on infant care centre facilities, one of them was really impressed and happy when i told them that it’s a requirement to have a separate fridge for storing b/milk. they were even more impressed when i told them that many working mothers here are encouraged to express b/milk with the availability of nursing room facilities.

yeah, yeah. here i go again, huh, being all militantist? tsk.

now, somebody hand me some paint… *unbuttons shirt*

wakakaka.. u know what, before i was ‘educated’, i’ve always thought bfeeding was for kampung folks, u know, never having seen any of my close relatives bfeeding their babes. so i pretty much understand why some ppl are so clueless abt bfeeding & the misconception of it all.

is he 100% on goat’s milk now?

  2. TwinKz says:

it *is* a noble cause. for you as well to have gone as far as you have to breastfeed aniq. i duno if i have the tenacity or drive to keep at it especially after i go back to work.

a beautifully written piece, as usual!

  3. hana says:

farah, i dunno if i can go thru it again either, really, what with an active toddler around! i’ll be happy with exclusively six months, then review from there. then again, i intend to take a longer maternity the nx time round so with less $$ to spare, shd be motivation enough! :p

ya anne, funny, i NEVER thought about it before giving birth. i’d never seen or taken notice of anyone b/feeding before, coz no one in my family has done it. well, other than my grandmothers, but that’s coz of circumstances, they’re too poor, they didn’t work, and i don’t think there were any milk powders available in the kampungs back then?
and yes, he’s an anak kambing now. embeekkkk! (my personal protest against nestle, abbott dan sebagainya, lol!)

  4. yani says:

hi..interesting entry.i have a breastfeeding fetish 2…luckily for me, i studied bout b/feedg when i was in poly, so i always try to advocate b/feeding to friends..however im quite sad cos i don’t seem to have enough breastmilk for my baby now..so terpaksa kasi partial..
    keep those b/feeding news coming…

  5. hana says:

hi, lemme guess, you studied nursing in poly? :)
don’t be sad leh. just gotta be extra careful with making milk in baby’s first 6 mths, i guess. i was way too lazy to wash and sterilise all the time, which was a driving factor for me! now nak wash bottles, i get grumpy. i hate ‘em! :S

  6. yani says:

i studied food science & nutrition..yah i hate washing bottles too! it’s never-ending! i actually feel guilty everytime i have to give my baby formula..she has a hearty appetite lah…

  7. inverted misa says:

hehe! si angelina punya gambar tu boleh buat lelaki stim kodok! lolololololololol! she’s very boo-tiful hor, and i like her for the charity and volunteerism work she did for the people!

agree with u abt breastfeeding, im not a militantist, but i strongly encourage breastfeeding lor. if i could do it again, i would! i bf for 3 months and proud of it! next time, kena pakai N-puller! ;-)

aniwe, for those moms-to-be out there, let me share this advice i get from a friend,

“At the end of the day, everyone will tell you that every child is different, but no one says that every mum is different too, which is actually the case, isn’t it? Every child is different, so is every mum. Some mothers are naturally blessed with more supply, some are not; some have more determination and perseverance, some less; some have a higher threshold for pain, some less, whatever it is, every mum wants the best for her child, so just listen to yourself, your body – do that which makes you happy. At the end of the day, breast milk is best, but formula milk is NOT going to hurt your baby. Do whatever it takes that will make you a happy mum, okay? You are the best judge, not even your mum can tell you what you should do.”

    happy breastfeeding (or formula-milking)!!

come come hana, unbutton ur shirt…now! hehehe!

ps: itu t-shirt for the international breast milk project very nice hor!!

  8. mahd says:

i’m always eager to learn more about b/feeding but quite worried that i won’t be able to. how do you keep the supply of b/milk going?

“it’s a requirement to have a separate fridge for storing b/milk” – it is?

  9. Mariani says:

I breastfeed Marsya till now perut tak kempis2. People keep asking me, “r u pregnant?”, “is it a boy or a girl?” Maybe my last pregnancy, my tummy was so big and now I have trouble losing those fats and loose skins. Nazir keeps asking me to do cardio exercises, running, walking etc but I also don’t have running shoes.

Jom Hana, lets get pregnant together-geder nxt year. I rather have a tummy fill with a baby, hehe!!

  10. hana says:

jom mariani, lol! alamak, you pon tarak running shoes eh?? should get our husbands’ Organisation to provide Healthy Lifestyle vouchers for their wives’ jugak eh! izad and nazir – triple S! ;)

(ouhhh, speaking of getting preg, i just heard news that SOMEONE in my family is knocked up AGAIN!!!!!!! *hyperventilates*…..)

mahd, you have lots of time still to read up as much as you can! get a good pump, get good moral support, and you can always ask any experienced mums out there for advice or help, k. (yes, me oso can lahhh!)
(and yes, for infant care centres, they must hv a separate fridge to store b/milk and baby food.)

inverted misa, next round if you want, i volunteer to help pull your nipple k, LOL! (ada tokoh jadi angelina buat charity and volunteer work tak ni?) yup, we’re living in a developed country so less chances of contamination in our water, not so dangerous. but imagine that, those living in poor countries, brainwashed by formula companies selling them a hope for a ‘brighter’ child and future, but at the expense of unknowingly endangering their child’s health! :S
    ok, paranoid hana.
i love slogan tees, but on kids lah. come, you want to do body painting on me…?

ouhh yani, that’s an interesting course! i wish i’d studied more ‘relevant’ things like that. (i did english & literature instead, and all i can do now is write blogs, sheesh!) :D

    http://www.celebrity-babies.com/2007/05/maggie_gyllenha.html

    lol!

u know, i rilly wish i was more disciplined and breastfeed him more..n i intend to breastfeed longer if i get a second kid. hopefully can get an extended leave.

for arshad, i didnt really have problem with supply. but it was a matter of convenience and selfish reasons and lack of discipline esp when i get back to work, i let my supply dwindle. n once i’ve alreadi let my son take nestle, i guess it’s going to be ok also for him to graduate to transfat McD fries soon..heheh

  16. hana says:

i know! i went “YAY MAGGIE!” when i saw pics of her nursing in public! :D
    now THAT’S a milf.
and is, after one yr old, i’m also guilty of feeding him ‘junk’ like mcD fries lorr, hehhee. dunno if i’d undone all the ‘goodness’! but ok lah, i still manage to keep him off all sweets and candies and colas. (and intend to for a long time still!) chocs, however, i’ve succumbed to. i figure that’s got dairy so it’s justified, lol!

nad, the prob with u and i… our boobs are a quarter the size of hers? hehehee!

chuchu, mentel tak ikut mak bapak, betol tak bedek. kita sungguh straight dan fierce.

  17. WBW 2006…

i asked a few people if advocating TBF (total breastfeeding) in this day and age is a lost cause.
one reply i got was, that it puts a lot of pressure on mums-to-be.
fair enough. i hope, in my personal quest to promote TBF, that i never offend or put t…

  18. irashabriz says:

  21. irris says:

I read abt the breastmilk project through a us-based forum too. Very interesting idea eh..teringat zaman nabi2..ehehhe…

Do you know if such things are available here too? Sadly kat sini..if yr baby belom discharged from hospital when you have..chances are, they’ll be fed formula for convenience’s sake. Oh well..if situation dont permit..then I guess, no choice lor..

  22. hana says:

yah nani, wet nurses in the modern times have gone GLOBAL! such is the power of technology eh? amazing.
i’m not sure if there’s a b/milk bank here, but i do know of people who donate their excess b/milk to others. i guess it’s sticky here coz of muslims in our community, the issue of ibu susuan and all. i dunno..

  23. liz says:

ask him for running shoes when your birthday/anniversary/whatever special day comes. heehee. my reason for not running was no socks. not far from no shoes!

  24. hana says:

eewww running shoes for my BIRTHDAY?! ANNIVERSARY??!! i’ll throw it back at him or ask for refund, lol!
those days are reserved for nice shiny things in little blue boxes and white ribbons. ;p

  25. anis / bloghopper says:
