mum went for a minor operation a few days ago.
nothing life-threatening, just a simple procedure to remove a deep-rooted pimple (yes, at the not-so-adolescent age of sixty!) on her right cheek that’s been a constant source of irritation to her for many, many years. no amount of facials and cosmetic creams could get rid of it.
until i told her about a certain doctor in our community who could, that is.
she finally got round to visiting the doctor’s clinic (somewhere in the east) and within a few hours, she had two stitches on her right cheek, and a plaster over it ala nelly (the rapper).
she’d also asked me before the surgery whether she should have this prominent mole near her right eye removed, and i was rather adamant that she didn’t. i don’t know why i got sentimental over a mole – it’s just a mole! – but i seem to attach significance to hers for some reason.
i think we’re not supposed to believe in things like physiognomy (the study of faces) or ‘moleosophy’ (obviously the study of moles lah), since it’s akin to astrology after all, but it’s interesting nonetheless.
one site read:
A mole located near the outer corner of either eye: it is said that the person will be of a placid, frugal, and temperate nature.
another one said:
If the mole is located on the outer corner of the eye, this indicates that the person is honest, reliable and forthright.
and well, they’re both reflective of mum’s nature, actually. she IS all of the above. hmm.
anyway, ‘tahi lalat’ being one of my less-flattering nicknames (and i shan’t mention what the others are, this is a family-oriented blog after all), i couldn’t help but look up on THAT mole.
:-.) <-- yes, that one.
but what do YOU think it means? :-.p
i think i mentioned this in previous posts before, but three generations of women in my family each has a mole on the upper lip - me, my mum, and her mum. my grandma and i have the same one on the same side, while mum's is on the opposite side. i think it's fascinating that we're linked this way, kinda like a passed-down trait. i can only hope that my *future* daughter will have one too, on her left side, no less. like mum's. won't that be cool?
i also have one on my right temple and one my left temple, and erm, one at another part of my body which, in moleosophic terms, isn't very good, so erm, i shan't mention it here. (no, not my buttock. or my 'downstairs'. really!)
oh, there's a ‘visual’ way of discovering your moles if you, say, don’t know the name of your body parts, hehe.
anyway, back to my mum’s mole – she DID have it removed, despite my protest. she said it wasn’t painful at all, and all that’s left for now is dried blood, which the doctor will clean up tomorrow. i think hor, this doctor wants to make a bit more money. he suggested to have it removed since it may grow malignant. tsk.
and he even suggested removing THAT mole on her upper lip, can you believe it?! that’s like, sacrilegious, lor! it’s like chopping off a link in our three-generation chain! thankfully, mum refused. phew.
the mole was placed in a vial, and i’m not sure what he’s done with it.
perhaps it sits on a shelf somewhere, part of a collection, to be used as future props in a phua chu kang reunion episode.
