“di mana dia,
anak kambing saya?
anak kambing saya,
yang namanya aniq!”

… everybody now! :D

i started the ‘kid’ (ha ha) on goat’s milk after some researching (and soul-searching), and whaddaya know – he likey!

so much so that the two litres of hay’s goat’s milk delivered at the doorstep on the dawn of thursday morning was all gone in 60 seconds. ok lah, ‘kid’ding (ha ha), by saturday morning, actually.

since that went down well (literally), we scouted around mustafa centre for a powdered version. according to my colleague and fellow avid b/feeding mum who weaned off both her healthy kids on goat’s milk, you can get it for two dollars cheaper there than at ntuc.

and whaddaya know – he likes it very muchly too!

so the conclusion is: my anak kambing is a greedy little goat who will wallop anything that’s given to him.

or, it actually tastes good, contrary to popular belief.

i tried taking a whiff of the goat’s milk, and it was surprisingly quite… pleasant. no, err, goaty smell (not that i know what goats smell like, but i’m assuming it’s akin to someone who hadn’t bathed in a month), just a normal fresh-milk smell.

and for the powdered version, no goaty smell there either; it’s pretty well-masked by a nice vanilla smell.

after five months of plying cow’s formula on the little one, i can’t help but find the smell and taste rather… metallic, and unpleasant. my sensitive nose is quite turned off by it, especially when discarding unconsumed milk from the bottle. it smells… pukey. maybe it’s just me, but i simply don’t like the smell of formula. (yes, i’ve tried a couple of them). :S

i really can’t be too sure of the long-term benefits of goat’s milk, and i’m certainly not gonna declare that it’s better than cow’s milk (like i did, and always will, with b/milk) – i is no scientist after all. just a (cerewet) mom going with her gut feel.

well, a little googling helped too…

- goat milk is a far better emulsion than cow’s milk;
- the oil globules of goat milk are one-fifth the size of cow’s milk;
- the reaction of goat milk is alkaline (the same as mother’s milk), whereas cow milk gives an acid reaction;
- the curd in goat milk is small and flocculent, hence easily digested and assimilated, while cow milk has large dense curd that is largely indigestible and causes an excess of catarrh and constipation;
- the goat is a browser fond of herbs and barks (as opposed to a cow, which is a grazer), and thus its milk is high in silicon—silicon is the enemy of tuberculosis, which is never found among goats or goat milk but flourishes among cows;
- goat milk is naturally homogenized, but in our attempt to duplicate this process in cow milk something went wrong;
- and, finally, The Journal of the American Medical Association, the official organization of 100,000 physicians in the U.S., under the heading “Dietetics and Hygiene??? says: “The goat is the healthiest domestic animal known. Goat milk is superior in every way to cow’s milk. Goat milk is the ideal food for babies, convalescents and invalids, especially those with weakened digestive powers. Goat milk is the most healthful and complete food known.”
- from ‘the national association for child development’

there seems to be a lot of controversy surrounding cows versus goats, and it probably has little bearing to many mothers who are perfectly comfortable with their current choice of formula (if they are no longer b/feeding).

maybe i subconsciously resent the formula companies for marketing their products so effectively and successfully, and for taking over my milk-producing duty, that i kinda wanna rebel against them. macam personal vendetta liddat. and since the goat is the underdog (like b/feeding seems to be, sigh), i’m inclined to give them the support. (great, it’s not enough that human’s milk has been politicised, even the different animals’ milk has joined the fray!)

The nutritional value of goat milk has been acknowledged by many cultures for centuries. However, the cow milk industry around the world has developed in a more sophisticated manner in terms of production, marketing and research compared with the goat milk industry. The key benefit which the cow milk industry enjoys is that cow milk can be produced more economically than goat milk, largely due to the greater productivity of the cow. However, the economic advantages do not necessarily mean that cow milk is more suitable for human consumption. In fact, many consider that goat milk is closer to human milk.

anyway, it’s a parental right for a first-time mum to experiment on her first child, isn’t it? hee. i’ll keep him on this for a while, and see if his very mild eczema (itchy and scratchy joints) and phlegm will go away for good. so far, the runny nose has stopped. then again, could be the antibiotics and snuffle babe vapour rub i’ve been slathering on his feet at night doing their tricks.

now, if only they sold human b/milk in the market…

(THEN i’d happily quit my job and ‘milk’ myself full-time – for $$$, yeay!)

    “now, if only they sold human b/milk in the market…” Hahaha this is funny! Kesian mak budak have to constantly pump nanti. LOL! :P

    This is pretty interesting. Some people told me that drinking goat’s milk is much better than cow’s milk. I have never even tried coz I don’t know whether it’s menggemukkan for us or not. Hehe! I health conscious sikit. Hehe!

    But then kan, the one that you bought at Mustafa, that one has the taste of vanilla? Purely no smell of goat? Hehe! Macam gitu me oso want to try la.. Breastfeeding mums also can drink this?

  2. comot says:

    auntie hana, maybe u should bring aniq to visit hay dairy goat farm in the western part of SG! Can go and feed babygoats, mothergoats, fathergoats,datuk and nenek goats! and oh, its free entry!

  3. nad says:

    hmmm.. i was wondering about the smell. i’ve read so much about goat’s milk and i know that it’s good but i always thought the milk will smell like the goat cheese i once had. (can die!!! UUWWWWWEEEERRRGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!)

    i think i’m gonna order a bottle and hope that huda doesnt mind it. i intend to re-introduce one bottle feed per day.

    to think that i had such a tough time getting her to like the breast…

  4. lynn maharet says:

    hana hana..supermarket never sell the bottled goat milk ker?? i think i drank once long long time ago..tapi mcm ader smell..ntah from where ahhaha

  5. hana says:

    nad, minimum order is 2 bottles (ie. 2 litres) for home delivery, and it can last one week. i think kids are generally adaptable, but i don’t know abt fussy drinkers/eaters. anak kambing saya sumer bedal. kayu dgn batu kalau kita tak nampak pon dia ngap agaknye. but it’s true lah, initially it WAS hard to get him to accept formula after a year of BM. harder still since you’re a sahm, she knows you’re around, lagi baik dia mintak the real thang! :D

    yes, we will visit the kambings at hay’s soon. to thank them personally for their commendable efforts ha ha.

    idasie, i DO know a mother who constantly pumped for more than a year each time she had babies coz she had too much milk and if she stopped, she’d get mastitis and fever… and her babies couldnt suckle directly coz the fast flow of her milk makes them choke! (kalau pasal b/feeding ni, macam macam citer saya ada, hee.) oh and she produced so much milk, she even donated the excess to other babies who needed it (eg. triplets, etc)… but she’s chinese, so there’s no issue of ‘ibu susuan’ or whatever.
    as for which milk makes u fat, erm… as long as we consume everything in moderation, shd be ok lah. :p
    b/feeding mums shd drink anmum (which tastes yukky) or frisomum (which tastes slightly yummier). but they say if u notice your baby getting colicky or allergies from your b/milk, then u shd stop taking all kinds of dairy, including milk.
    for more info, sila tanya doctor anda… or read up more abt it! :))

    lynn, i only saw one brand of bottled goat’s milk at mustafa, but it’s UHT. i’m not sure abt UHT milk, the hay’s one seems fresher… tak tau ah! pening pikirkan pasal isu susu ni! lol!

    down here in KL, certain mamak restaurants serve goat’s milk.
    but I have yet to experiment on my Hawra.

    Hmm..maybe this weekend can go to buy from the neighbourhood’s mamak restaurant and give it a try!

    cayalah aniq…from tek to bek..u rock! heh heh :D

  8. Idasie says:

    Oh wow!! Thanks for the useful info. Never know some mums can b/feed for a year! Gosh!! Hehe.. This is really interesting. And yah…I think when the time comes, I must ask the doc alot of things till he/she become pening. Muahaha! Thank u sis…

  9. Red Herring says:

    :-S FP hates formula milk (I took a gulp and hated it too). Spoonfeed ke, bottle feed ke, tak jalan. Ntah2 nak kena kasi susu kam-biang jugak. *sigh*

  10. hana says:

    dun worry mr goat, i’m talking abt your female counterparts! :p

    waahahaaa, from Tek to Bek… that’s a good one zalin! boleh jadi campaign slogan….

    idasie, of COURSE you can bfeed exclusively for a year, i sure as heck did, and partially for another 3 mths. others can do it even longer, up to four years even!!

    red, you and i same. donch like the taste since i tasted dadam’s, before aniq was even born. :S

  11. naufal says:

    embekkkk…embekkkk…embek!

    goat’s speak for “gua caya sama lu la brudder!” ;)

    wait till my mother gets over her aversion to goat scents! satu botol buat mari! ;)

  12. effa says:

    babe, this goat milk for 4mths old baby bleh tak??

  13. hana says:

    hi effa, please stick to b/milk or infant formula for babies under 12mths! anything else is not suitable.. after they turn 1 year old, you can sental them with anything you want okie? hehee.

    naufal! blame ur daddy lah, for bringing her to see the goats time dating dulu dulu… lol!

  14. mahd says:

    hmmm, i remembered disliking goat’s milk instantly when i went to the goat’s farm with my kiddos.

  15. is says:

    i went to the organic shop at tjg pagar wholesale and they have organic goat milk infant formula..but i thk it was also for kids above 1 yr lah dindt check..n it wasnt that expsenive compared to normal brand..i thk abt $27 if not wrong.

  16. hana says:

    i think goat’s infant formula is gaining popularity, and maaaybe below 12mths can take it, i’m not too sure, coz some say can, some say better not… but as long as it says for ‘infant’, then they shd have fortified it accordingly, i suppose?
    yah, it only costs a lil bit more than commercial cow’s. :)

    mahd, the milk that’s delivered frm the farm doesnt smell that bad leh… :)

  17. Kit says:

    Hmm interesting post. We fed my now 2 yrs old tot Karihome’s infant goat’s milk for slightly over a yr before we switched over to Gain IQ. Like yr boy, our son will gobble whatever tt we feed him. Those ard us who gotta know that we were feeding him goat’s milk gave us weird looks and “funny” comments. I guess goat’s milk isn’t too popular within our community then. Haha.

    Reason we changed was primarily because it was so leceh finding them. Karihome can only be bought at Guardian and Cold Storage. Mustafa also do sell them. But very limited lah. So sometimes have to travel from 1 mall to another to get them! So very the leceh!

    Plus the price of 1 small tin of Karihome is almost equivalent to 1 big tin (900g) of Gain IQ!!! But till now, especially when our boy is down with the nasty flu or bronchititis, we will give him the good ol’ Karihome. So far alhamdulillah, it does help to lessen his phlegm and cough etc etc.

  18. hana says:

    hi kit!! ahh, so the goat’s milk did help your boy with phlegm and cough? alhamdulillah… it’s heartening to hear that. :)
    have you tried this brand, Healtheries? i don’t think it costs as much. and yah, i can imagine how you’d get those “weird looks and funny comments”. heck, i even get that when i mention exclusive b/feeding too. the cow is very popular, i tell ya! :D

    oh i wanted to mention something else. my mum and our helper pointed out recently that his breath doesn’t smell anymore either, and it’s true!! it used to smell VERY masam, esp when his hands have been in his mouth. but right after he started on goat’s milk, his saliva – and hands – simply stopped smelling stinky. hmm…

  19. Kit says:

    Hmm never heard of tt brand before. Muz check it out. Hehe.. talkin abt smells.. my aunt used to complain her 2 grandsons (also on Karihome tt time) kinda stink. But i didnt have tt problem with my boy. So maybe diff kids will have diff reactions?

    But have you monitored Aniq’s stools? My boy’s stools got smellier after switched him over to Gain IQ. Hehe..

  20. hana says:

    yahh his stools seem to be less smelly too. with gain iq it was O M G! terrible. :S

  21. dyan says:

    pricenya berapa tuk yang growing up milk karihome? 400g? 900g?
    thanks ya
