the little one and i have been coughing persistently for a couple of months now. we’re not sure why, we’d gone for so many visits to the doctors, and one (rather dubious) doctor even said we have an allergy, though she couldn’t enlighten further when i asked what triggered it. did i have neighbours with dogs or cats, she asked. well yeah, but we’ve been staying here for three years so how could it only happen now? my request for a chest xray for both or either of us was also inconsequentially waved away.
i had the last straw when the little one merlioned out a whole puddle of yellow phlegm one night after a bout of cough.
so, saturday morning (after cleaning up his bedsheet YET again from an entire bottle of freshly-merlioned milk), with the daddy at work, i got him ready and brought him myself to kkh for a check up. the nurse offered a chest xray for him (like, finally, someone with sense!) and off he went, into the xray room.
a check showed that he had yellow phlegm at the back of his throat, and the cute little xray revealed that he had a mild chest infection. well, someone should’ve told us that sooner! and only then did they give him antibiotics and a stronger cough medication.
i think it may be hereditary, this phlegm problem. i remember i was hospitalised for a few days when i was small because of the dastardly phlegm. and when i coughed like mad, my dad would SCOLD me instead of comforting me, blaming me for sleeping with the fan full blast at my feet, or drinking cold drinks, or just plain ol’ “batok, batok! bising!”. i used to go to my room and cough INTO my pillow to muffle the sounds, in fear of my dad’s scolding. (yeah, that’s how it was, and still is, with my dad and i – i never tell him any of my discomforts or problems.)
so anyway, i’m hoping the antibiotics will work this time round for him. i’d finished my course of antibiotics, but the cough still lingers. it’s probably chronic. and i blame myself for infecting him.
tu lah, tidor dengan kipas kat kaki lagi… minum air sejuk lagi…

look on the bright side u only have one merlion to deal with…the other time all 4 were merlioning it was chaos…the whole house had to be disinfected…ended up smelling like a hospital…
i know! i always remind myself its only ONE kid, so i cannot complain, hehe. eh at least sham has experience working in a hospital to know what to do. if it was me with FOUR merlioning kids, i end up jumping in the spore river agaknye, lol!
aiyoh. heard there’s a virus going around. had a viral infection myself. sampai pengsan dalam mrt! (i know, how super embarrassing!) anyway, do take care yeah? of yourself and the little one! i’m gonna repeat the oft-said auntie remedy: drink lots of water!
but not air sejuk hor. hehe.

Yeah, my boboi also have that merlion thing going on when he was young. Used to jump in panic becoz my flooring was laminated wood.. heh.. so many warped area *tsk mummy dat time was more concerned about her flooring than her poor coughing boy” bad mommy!..
nieway, wat the doc said was to avoid cold drinks, gassy/sugary drinks and milk.. So for that time, I switched to soya-based milk and alhamdullilah it worked. So he was force-fed with soya-based milk and also lots..lots of plain warm water. He hated it but I forced it :(. Maybe you should try to see a good paediatrician?
ooh i’m glad someone finally let the lil one get a chest x-ray! remember me telling you what a *ahem* hot doctor *wink* told me about coughing incessantly for more than 2 weeks? he insisted that i should get a chest x-ray done cos any coughing that lasted more than a week is not mere common cough. at that time, i didn’t think it was necessary so i didn’t get one myself (altho he pseudo-threatened he’d personally x-ray me if he’s here hehe). i told you about it, and you said all your docs pooh-poohed the idea, saying it’s just a normal cough, nothing to worry about.
anyhoos, hope the meds kick in quickly and you and aniq will feel better soon!
ps: i oso kena stomach flu last weekend. urgh, there’s no escaping this virus, i guess.
your dad sounds like mine..he would scold us when we were sick for not being/doing itu lah inilah..lol
i still have a bottle of antibiotics untouched though from the last time Arshad had the terrible cough..coz lukily he managed to clear it. i m just hoping he will not become asthmatic..becoz that runs in the family also!
if my parents, they would say “tulah, mandi malam2 lagi” :S
anyway, i got an email yest about this coughing problem. it says try to rub some vicks on the feet/legs then cover with blanket. Insyallah mujarab! ahh cubala :D
thankfully, the diagnosis is out. get well soon, aniq. and mummy, of course.

speaking of people scolding you for falling sick cos you did not do or did certain things (eg mandi malam2, minum air sejuk, et al), i had to relate a funny story. i sms’d a friend yesterday telling her i was sick over the weekend and she responded with “tu lah, orang cakap jangan main kat bawah, nak main jugak, kan dah sakit!” and i had a good laugh from it. i’ve not heard that for a long long time. heh.
oooh…poor aniq! :( hope the antibiotics would help clear that darn phlegm! what’s wrong with all these doctors! :S
i think our parents semua sama la… mine would go, “kalau batuk tu, batuk bersopan sikit!” like HUH???
yea, i got that email about the vicks vapour rub. even my tech-savvy mum got it in her email and kept harping about it to me just last week! nvr thought much of it until now. hmmm…mebe can try ar…
hey! both nks and i just recovered from cough too. horrible!
after numerous visits to the family doctor, at last, we recovered. BUT not from gulping down those antibiotics and cough mixtures though. here’s what both of us went through….
1 – we tried the rub-vicks-generously-on-the bottom-of-the-feet-at-bedtime-then-cover-with-socks tip and both had a good night sleep without coughing.
but we still cough in the day. :(

it’s a good thing you brought him to the hospital. his condition could get serious like when nunu was diagnosed with bronchiolitis. Like you, we tried to figure out what could have triggered it, was it the food that she was eating, were we negligent at bedtime for not putting socks or warmer clothing on her, was the house too dusty or messy & in your case, was it you who infected him in the 1st place. There will come a time when you will to put the blame game to rest & just exercise more caution & moderation in everything you do for the little one.

and i also read about that vicks thing. but, the instructions say it’s suitable for children above 2 yrs old, so that’s why i’m not keen on it. i’m a stickler for instructions, esp on medications. anyone else has tried on their kids below 2 and any effects? zalin? :S

but yahhhhh, actually you’re right, one of my bad bad bad habits is bathing late at night. most of the times it’s coz aniq won’t let me go to the toilet, and when i sneak in to shower, he’ll come and stand in front of my shower door, pulling at his shirt to join me, lol! and yah, can mcdreamy come and give me an xray too? using his eyes pon boleh, lol!
esah, ko pon suka mandi malam eh… but kengkadang balik lambat got no choice per! :p
is, i dun hv asthma in my immediate family, but i think that’s dangerous… i was worried we were both having bronchitis or sumthing. and yah lah, our parents always blame us for our ailments kan? even now, when i think about it, mcm terbawak-bawak… if he falls, i’ll blame him for causing it upon himself. eh, but that’s a bit different lah kan, coz he can control his movements but not illnesses?…
saly, ehh my mum pon sama, more worried abt her floors, lol! she said the vomit will stain it, padahal err, it’s polished marble leh. can stain ke?? and i also (partly) blame the milk lah, actually. me and formula, it’s love-hate relationship. more hate than love. arggh. i think i wanna try soy-based too. perhaps i shd hv continued BFing till 2yrs, i’ll never know… :S

hi hana, i guess now this couging disease is common nowadays….dah musim ah…..my mum also been coughing for a month straight….pity her…but alhamdullilah my son is not infected….guess the vitC & multivits which his been consuming since he was 10month (right after he was admitted to hospital) might have help him fight oth viral…perhaps u can ask ur son paedetrician…..

but at that point of time, I was in a panic. Hawra had been coughing for 1 week, and even finished her course of antibiotics, but the cough refused to go away. So I thought, ah..what the heck, just try ajelah..
That night, for the 1st time in 1 week, she slept thru the night, takde batuk, takde merengek2 pon!

I’ve been blog-hopping and came across your blog.
About this rubbing of vicks at your kids feet, it really worked for both my sons. I’ve experienced the same thing with my 10 months old boy two weeks ago. He has been having phlegming cough for abt two weeks, vomitting after every feeding, finished two bottles of cough syrup and I finally gave up. I tried this vicks rubbing on his feet and put on his socks at night….it works wonder….he slept thru the night without any coughing and within two days its gone. Actually come to think of it…the vicks is only for external use….I think it works better than giving medication/drugs all the time to babies.
Well that is from my point of view….Hope your boy get well soon!

if im not mistaken, there’s vicks for kids kan? but it’s not under the brand vicks. Cannot remember ah, but the cap is pinkish-purplish camtu.
there is a vapour rub thing, like vicks for babies (above 6mth) and toddlers..found it at mustapha (on one of the shelves at the pharmacy section) if u want to try that..
when Arshad was coughing, we used that instead of Vicks. not sure if that was it that cleared him tho..but we used quite a bit on him.

I juz came across your blog. I also experience the same thing with my daughter when she was a year old. We found out that she was allergic to the milk that we gave her after I stopped breastfeeding. Did you recently changed your son’s milk to other brands? Coz sometimes kids may be allergic to cow’s milk. For us, we had to switch to soya milk for a while and alhamdulilah she got better after that. Maybe you should ask your PD if Aniq is allergic to his current formula milk. Hope you guys will get better soon.
yup, i think the effect of cow’s milk maaaay be doing something to him, coz it only happened after i stopped breastfeeding totally abt 3mths ago… (gosh, it’s ONLY been 3mths??? feels like forever leh! sob…)

i’m so tempted to wean huda off now tapi after reading this (and conveniently putting the blame squarely on formula milk), i’ve decided that i’d rather have her wake up 6 times a night for milk than have her cough the night away.
then again, that makcik doesnt even want a teeny weeny bit of pediasure in a bottle, sippy cup, cereal or anywhere within a 10-metre radius. so i have no idea how i’ll ever wean her off.
Whenever I have coughs, it will kekal berpanjangan, orang cakap batuk-3-bulan. And I don’t cough like uhuk uhuk. I cough like uhuk-uhuk-uhuk-uhuk-uhuk-uhuk-uhuk like there’s no tomorrow.
Last cough was in March till April. Thank God only one month. But then in May, I get it again. I asked the doctor why? Why? Why?!! He said my body immune system no good. He suggested vitamins and all that. So I bought that cod liver oil thingy and other things and force myself and my son (who is also prone to jangkit) to eat them. Mudah-mudahan mujarab.
You should try too. Kalau tak baik jugak, kita sama sama terjun itu Singapore River! :-/
PS. My dad tak marah kalau I batuk macam nak pengsan. Pasal dia pun dua kali lima! LOL.
mine doesnt even sound as dainty as ‘uhuk-uhuk’, it’s more bullfrogish than that, lol! and yes, it’s the 3-mths+ type.
after antibiotics it’s better, but in cold aircon, it comes back as ‘uhuk-uhuk’.
i think my immune system sucks too. always forget to eat fruits.
i hate popping pills, even vits! :S

anyway, i swore by the vicks tips too. nks had a prolonged coughing for 2 wks and it didnt go away after finishing a bottle of the cough mixture. but after applying the vicks she can sleep peacefully at night. aside from that my mum made me ordered FRESH goat’s milk. she sez it helps to rid the phlegm (which she reads somewhere or heard over radio …cant remember) and sure it does! Alhamdulillah.
i ordered the goats milk online from hay dairies. they send the milk to your doorstep early in the morning…….mine at 7am! i had it warm and fed nks with it.
she drank 250ml of it and it was gone within 24hrs. Alhamdulillah! you should try yourself too. can add to your cuppa coffee, tea or milo. but for aniq, just let him have it in its natural form. ;-)
