did you read in the local news about the seven-year-old child who recently passed ‘o’ level chemistry?

gosh. i barely passed mine at sixteen. even if i lived to be a hundred, i still wouldn’t know what to do with a freaking pipette. (and this coming from one who unwittingly did pure chem in sec school and failed miserably at every test, till ‘o’ levels when i *did* finally get a pathetic ‘C’, which incidentally was what the seven-year-old scored too, so you can say my understanding of chemistry is that of a genius seven-year-old’s… hah!)

according to his dad’s blog, the boy started crawling at four months (!), and started walking at six months (!), and started talking and reading earlier in general than his peers. and he does stuff like doodle atoms. (while i doodled stars – damn i should’ve taken up astronomy.)

his youngest brother (aniq’s age) is apparently a “genius” too because he can do stunts like climb up the stairs backwards, started speaking at eight months, etc.

!!

try as we might not to compare our kids with others, or use their achievements and developments as yardsticks or benchmarks, there’s something inherently competitive in our nature as human beings to do just that – compare.

we KNOW it’s unhealthy (for us and our kids), and we KNOW it’s unfair (coz every child is different), but we do it anyway, even if it’s somewhere at the back of our minds.

“their kid can do that, why can’t mine?”

it’s harrowing enough that we have to check against the developmental milestones charted in their health book every few months to see if they have the appropriate skills at the appropriate age. but measuring up to these proclaimed child geniuses/prodigies… hmm… you can’t help but wonder…

and as our parental pride deflates, we swallow the humble pie, and be thankful that our child is simply healthy, happy… and undeniably average.

he may not be a “genius” or a “prodigy”, but the future before him brims with hope and possibilities of being Someone Special or doing Something Good, in one way or another. we can only pray, and do our best to guide him… :)

meanwhile, the boy is way too busy in his own world to bother with “the rat race”.

busy with what?

“THWOWWWWW! THWOWWW BAWLL!”

his current favourite phrase (and action – then again, he throws everything, not just balls), complete with exclamation marks at the end. do you notice how kids have a thing for exclamations? it’s like they have this incredible abundance of energy, not just in their perpetually propelling limbs, but also bursting from their lungs.

“NAKK!”
“STARHH!”
“STOPPPP!!”
“TEHHNNNN!!”
*SHRIEEEEK!!!*

aiyoh, what next, “ROCK NEVA DIEEE!!!”?

and then there’s this:

That little kid genius is in a whole world of his own lah. Good for him, but definitely it’ll be a challenge to keep stimulating his mind! I may be wrong, but I think the exposure he gets to all these brainy materials would definitely be more than kids out there who doodle simple clouds, instead of neurons!

I wouldn’t know how to raise a genius kid, actually. My maths & chem grades have always been terrible, just enough to get by. Jadi kalau my anak genius, camner lah aku nak layan eh??? Hehehe….

So yeah, let’s just be grateful for normal, healthy, babies :)

  2. hana says:

interestingly, that’s his dad’s concern too… kena constantly read up on the subject just to keep up with the kid. :)
hmm, jangan cakap lah, even psle math i dunno if i can help my kids with in future, ok! heh, problem sums will REALLY be a problem!

hmm, maybe i could teach him to blog. ;)

  3. misa says:

  19. HuS says:

gotta to love your kiddo. he’s fits his name to utter perfection. memang menawan hati! suka!

  22. hana says:

oh noo, sounds like he’ll be a bartop performer leh…

  23. is says:

its inevitable to want to compare and check milestones..
heheh.. but as long as he is normal, healthy and well adjusted, it’s fine with me..

aniq is that and more with his cute grins and friendly ways :)

  24. TwinKz says:

hahaha, all right it’s a done deal then. Of course, you have to include aniq giving lessons as part of the deal as well. LOL!
nahhhh bartop or npt, you gotta admit he’s one heck of a kid!

  25. Aini says:

Aunty Hana …. of coz they were pretty. Pretty Pretty shoes they were. *takes out map n a list*

And if i want to go jalan2, i tell my mummy,”Walk Walk!”
    ;-)

  26. Red Herring says:

Hehe.. Ya lah, sometimes we can’t help but compare babies. Si FP *still* can’t sit unassisted at this age and he’s going on 8 months already! I suspect it’s because he’s so roly-poly (last we checked 2 weeks back, he tipped the scales at 8.8kg). And who can blame me for being envious of babies who are already starting to cruise at this age?? Heh.

But he’s healthy, and for that I give myself a pat on the back for doing SOMETHING right. :P

  27. mahd says:

“ROCK NEVA DIEEE!!! sounds good to me :p

  28. hana says:

yati, i think they all make up for it at some point… in a few mths time, FP will be sprinting around like nobody’s business and you’ll be wishing he’d stay still for at least a one minute, lol! it’s all up to their individual readiness… but i agree, we do get a bit anxious, don’t we? :)

aini, u are getting to be so talkative like a mak nenek eh! must be the ‘girl thang’… ;)
sometimes i can’t help but wonder how much more aniq could’ve learnt if i’d stayed home instead of going to work. sighh.

    tx farah, can’t wait for 1 aug…!

aww is, tx! yup, well-adjusted, exactly the term i wanted to add in too.
hey we gotta meet arshad again soon… won’t it be interesting to see the four cousins play together? sure lasak. hehe.

  29. moby says:

Why is it that so many of these so-called child prodigies or geniuses have to go and take advanced tests and exams? Are they for their benefit or their parent’s, I wonder?

7 year old (genius or not) not enough just to play and enjoy life, meh? Must go university and get that degree by 14 or something? :(

  30. hana says:

yah, i know what u mean!
exams (esp o levels, lol!) are probably like the worst indicators of one’s IQ…
it’s hard to imagine a child himself wanting to sit for exams to prove something, isn’t it? heh. dunno lah… (i dun wanna sound, erm, ‘giftist’ lah!)
anyway, i think EQ is more important in getting you through life. :)

  31. moby says:

    Exxxxxactly! ‘Giftist’ eh? Haha!

Eh, but I think hor, clever people can act stupid, but stupid people will find it difficult to act clever.

So IQ, EQ, SQ all important lah. ;)

  32. hana says:

hehh… clever ppl can act stupid… like jessica simpson liddat har? lol!
oh wait… that’s the other way round… tuna or chicken, anyone?

    hmm, giftist, elitist… ;)

  33. nad says:

coming from a person who pronounced cation as keh-shen up to 2 month before her o levels, i say, that boy is really brilliant lah. all those moles or mol sume aku nggak mengerti. entah camne boleh dapat b for my combined chem-bio. (sebab bio questions sume general, smoke-able questions.)

aaaaanyway, budak tu genius betul lah.

anak anak kita? tak genius, takpe. asal sihat, beriman, jadi budak baik, etc etc etc mak dah happy.

(ni sour grape sket. nehmind lah kalau tak dapat C for chem at Os at 7. asalkan kau dapat A1 bila kau amik o lebel at 16)

  34. pinkyjumbo says:

    IQ, EQ bahhh!
i only want BBQ. when ah??

  35. hana says:

cation = ka-tie-on! ka-tie-on! i remember! omg, is that ridiculously amazing or what?! :D
jangan salah moles k… nanti kena tangkap.
u did combined chem-bio eh nad? i did pure chem (madness) and combined phy-bio. also smoked it like crazy, miraculously dapat a, lol! freak ah. ask me now, cannot remember anything on physics, but bio, reproductive systems tu sumer boleh draw with my eyes closed, hurhurr ;d

pj, bbq eh? yum yum! good fri ai mai? err, korean style….
